Whatever Floats Your Gondola

4.5 hours later I made it to Mestre from Florence. Our train was delayed because of a flood on the tracks. My first stop was McDonalds to get a happy meal for a late night dinner. We finally arrived to Anda Venice hostel which was definitely my favorite we stayed in. Anika got locked in the shower later on in the night so I’m not sure she enjoyed our hostel stay as much.

In the morning we set off to the island. We experienced fun shops, good food, gelato, and coffee. Walking around Venice you see beautiful churches and many hidden gems of shops.

Seeing the floating city, 2023

Venice is the city of canals, it stretches across small islands along the Adriatic Sea. Gondola rides surround all the canals. My little group and I did a short Gondola ride that I could’ve stayed on all day. It’s insane how well they can drive through such tiny areas and constantly drive customers all day.

Our night ended with a panini dinner, class discussion on the island, live music and laughing in the hostel lobby until 2am.

The last day in Venice we went on a Murano & Burano Islands Boat Guided Tour. Murano is the center of Venice’s famous glass-making industry since 1291. We saw a family create cup glasses and then saw their museum of work. At Burano, you are surrounded by many colorful houses and super nice civilians. While here I enjoyed lasagna and gelato. Most of my trip was eating multiple times a day so when we arrived back to Venice, I made sure to get one more last slice of Italian pizza before we head home.

Colorful Burano Island

I loved learning about this intriguing and elegant place. It’s in the middle of a lagoon. Twice every day the water in the lagoon drains from the city’s 124 islands and fills up with fresh seawater which makes Venice unique but also a task to handle. It was crazy to me to think their emergency services are served by boat such as ambulances, police, and the fire department.

The city works hard to keep the city afloat so I’d suggest to visit ASAP. It has wonderful food, great locals, pretty architecture, and is built on water. I’ve always loved being surrounded by oceans, lakes, and spending time near water so seeing a beautiful floating city of Venice was memorable.
